So full disclosure this isn’t my recipe, and for the life of me I can’t remember where I got it from originally but there are numerous blogs with the same sort of recipe. I’ve found this to be a fantastic recipe for training treats that is pretty adaptable! Both my dog Ellie and my sister’s dog Elliot love them!
I’m a huge fan of the soft versions, this way I can tear small pieces off as rewards. This strategy works well in training. Our pets enjoy the act of receiving the treats/praise, so giving them the same amount of treat in 7-8 pieces ends up being a larger perceived award than the same amount of treat but torn up in 2-3 pieces. So when I want to award Ellie for something that was so-so I may go with 2 small pieces, if she does something that is great I’ll give her the jackpot with 6 or 8 pieces!
I hate those posts that go on a two page ramble before they get to the actual recipe so here it is:
- 1 egg
- 1 can of tuna (I’ve also used cans of chicken and of salmon)
- 3/4 cup flour (I use all purpose)
That’s it!! crazy right? Blend the egg, canned meat, and flour in a food processor until it is a gross smooth meat paste. I then spread the ‘meat paste’ on parchment paper on a baking tray and bake in an oven at 350 for 15-20 minutes. I try to spread fairly thin as it makes it easier to tear off small pieces. Apparently you can also cook this in the microwave on high for 4-6 minutes (in 2 minute increments). I aim to maybe go on the light end of cooking to make sure it stays as soft as possible. When they are cool either freeze or keep in the refrigerator (for 7 days).
Apparently cats also like these but it did not hold true for mine. You can either spread in one big sheet and cut after they are out of the oven. I spread a few smaller sized pieces roughly the shape of a small chicken breast, that way i could freeze the portions and take them out when needed.
