This is depressing, it feels like the sweltering heat wasn’t that long ago and now I’m writing about how to get your pet winter ready. If you can’t tell I’m not the biggest fan of winter. I don’t hate the snow or anything but the lack of daylight gets to me!
I feel like most of these tips are pretty common sense but I hope that it can still be useful to some of the readers!
- As ridiculous as it seems, some dogs need coats in the winter! Especially our smaller friends and those with short hair coats.
- For those of you with long haired dogs with undercoats it is important to brush them regularly. Removing the dead fur/undercoat and brushing out any matted fur will help ensure that the insulating layer is working properly.
- Protecting their paws: there are many different forms of foot protection, boots and paw balm are probably the main ones. Salt and ice can wreak havoc causing cuts, irritation, and bleeding OUCH. My dog Ellie loves her boots (not), I will find a way to post the video if I can find it.
- Just like summer, don’t leave your pets in the car when the temperature is extreme!
Things to consider!
- If your pet hates wearing boots, and you don’t take them out too often make sure to trim the fur at the bottom of their feet, these can collect miniature snow balls that tug on the fur and can become quite painful. (If they are going for long winter walks please try either the boots or paw balm)
- If you use salt and other de-icers at home maybe consider sand or something that may be a bit more paw friendly
Finally: Get exercise, I know it’s hard, it’s cold and generally it’s dark but both you and your fluffy friend will benefit from the fresh air! Try breaking it up into two 15-20 minute walks.
