We like spoiling our pets, but there are a few things we think would be treats that could actually be very dangerous for our furry friends! This is not a comprehensive list and I would recommend checking with your veterinarian before feeding fluffy random table scraps.
- Number one on my list is onions, chives, and garlic: These foods contain a substance called thiosulfate, this compound causes damage and destruction of red blood cells (they kind of need those) and can cause gastrointestinal irritation (vomiting and diarrhea yay). It can cause very serious health concerns, we all love garlic and your pets probably will too until they are too sick to stand on their own.
- #2 is chocolate and coffee: The toxic substance are methylxanthines and can cause symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, abnormal heart rhythm, panting, restlessness, seizures and even death! ..so just don’t do it…(Fun anecdote: I had a dog that decided to eat a whole box of chocolate mint girl guide cookies, don’t worry the dog was fine! The owner had noticed quickly and brought her straight in, we made her vomit, but it was the best smelling vomit ever)
- Grapes and raisins: This is a fun one because we actually don’t know what the substance is that causes the toxicity. Furthermore it appears that not every animal is susceptible but those that are suffer kidney failure. Let’s be smart folks, is it really worth the risk?…….the answer is NO, no it is not worth the risk.
- Poultry bones: I’m not a fan of animal bones in general but I think these guys really work their way to the front of the line. Thinner and more fragile than their pig and cow friends they have a good chance of splintering. Nice thin chicken bone splinters are the ideal tool to help your pet choke or pierce and lacerate fun places like their esophagus, stomach and intestines (spoiler alert: this is not good).
- Yeast dough: uncooked yeast dough should NOT be fed to your dog. Active yeast in the warm environment of a stomach flourish and produce CO2 quickly. This reaction can result in bloating and even possible rupture of the gastrointestinal tract. Basically blowing your pet up like a balloon, dangerous and deadly.
I get it, I like treating my pup to a few scraps here and there. Do me a favor stick to safe bets like carrots, cucumbers, maybe a small piece of pepper or apple.
